 "Product Itself Is Garbage" 2009-07-14
By Beatrice (New York)
The ring came off the bottom of the can after 2 days because I had to use so much force getting the bag out. The can is very narrow, so a full bag gets stuck as you try to pull it out. The sensor stopped working after 3 months. They won't give me a refund, of course and the process of sending it in for repair is a nightmare. You pay shipping to mail it to the repair center. You must also include a check for $9.95 to cover return shipping once it's repaired, so it costs about $20 in shipping just to get it repaired and you only have 14 days to get it to them once you get the repair e-mail. That e-mail has a repair form attachment you must send in. You also have to send a copy of your original invoice. I'm sending it back for repair, but meanwhile, I bought a terrific Home Logic 13 gallon can with a touch top spring opening at Target. It's nice and wide, works great and cost only $20.

 "Piece of Garbage" 2009-05-26
By W. So (NJ, USA)
This truly is a piece of garbage. I've owned the original, rectangular iTouchless 13-gallon trash can and I can echo the other owners's experience that the lid is flimsy, mine broke after a year. This 2nd generation NX trash can is even less durable, even after having learned how to take precautions from damaging the lid (never touch it while it's operating), the mechanism still broke on its own after 3 months. Design-wise, it's a step in the wrong direction. The circular shape means that trash bags fit terribly, and the circular bag holder keeps is unable to hold the plastic and falls into the can. The lid itself is narrower than the original, its motor is louder and the infrared sensor is just as prone the original to activate inadvertently. How can this model be considered an improvement is beyond anyone's guess.

 "touchless trashcan a pleasure" 2009-04-30
By Landreth H. Fehlberg (Montana, USA)
my husband ordered this product because our newly adopted dog kept getting in the garbage. i love my new trash can. besides being animal-proof, it's very attractive and easy to clean. it's tall and hard, and the "touchless fly" opens whenever i wave my hand over it, making me feel very powerful. a button on the back holds it open when i need to scoop potato peels out of the sink. after about a month it's still working perfectly.

 "Not Worth The Money" 2009-03-09
By BJ (Port Orchard)
I bought this product in September 2008, by December the lid motor went out, so they sent me a new one. Now it is March and the new lid motor is going out. They offered me a new lid at 10% off, I said no thanks, I'm getting one with a step on lid, my foot still works.

 "decent design, poor execution" 2009-06-29
By Thomas C. Sideris (SoCal USA)
I was looking for a timer with a keypad for entering digits, instead of up and down arrows, and I chose this one. Unfortunately, the buttons do not work consistently. Pressing a button can result in zero, one, or two digits. The outcome appears to be random. For example, you can press "3" and "0" hoping for 30 seconds and end up with 3 minutes (3-0-0) or 3 minutes and 30 seconds (3-3-0). Replacement batteries cost as much as the timer itself. I would not buy this timer again.

 "Nice and Simpl" 2009-06-10
By Roman Craigle
I bought this timer as a task keeper for myself to have on my desk. I wanted something really simple to use, this fit the bill. Enter how much time you want, hit start, and the beeper goes off when the time is up. Easy. I even like the little stand it has on the back so that you can prop it up, even has 2 angles it sets at! I do wish there was a way to disable the beeper though.

 "disappointing!" 2009-05-21
By Richard Kremsdorf (San Diego CA USA)
Once time has elapsed and the beeps are shut off, time is reset to zero. If you are doing a repetitive activity, the time needs to be re-entered each time. Thus, for this purpose, the timer is not satisfactory.

 "Terrible Timer" 2009-05-04
By hope this helps
I have used several timers and use them throughout the day almost every day. I bought four of these because they were inexpensive. I was disappointed to find that the last time set does not reset when the timer signal sounds, a feature that other timers have. Also the signal gets scratchy or static-y at times. One of the magnets fell off the back of one and the stands have two positions, one of which they don't remain in very well.

Overall, I am disappointed and will not purchase these again. I think Pampered Chef makes the best timer, but was looking for something more reasonably priced, especially since my children use them as well.

 "Handiest Timer Design Ever" 2009-04-08
By D. C. Jones (NY,NY)
This is the way all count-down timers should be designed. It is instantly ready to use - just enter the time in minutes, and hit start. No selecting mode, scrolling up and down, etc. Each function has its own button, so no tedious multiple function buttons to toggle between. The 12 button keyboard is the key. Just enter the time directly with the 0 - 9 number buttons. Time up to 99 minutes. I have never seen another timer with this direct entry keyboard, and I have looked.

 "THIS IS SO COOL" 2009-08-14
By Diane E. Jezewski
I really like this pitter. Ok, it may leave a few pits on smaller cherries but with the big ones it is a breeze. That is the only reason for 4 stars. It cleans up in a breeze too. This made my jam making so much easier.

"Pit 4 cherries at once!" 2009-08-02
By jerjorju (Chicago)
Other cherry pitters I looked at only pitted one cherry at a time. This pits 4 cherries and the pits (seeds) are captured below. It worked pretty well. My adult daughter said she did get a cherry that still had the pit in it. So I recommend double checking the cherries before giving to a young child or a special needs person who may not be able to communicate that there is a pit in that cherry.

Keep a paper towel handy because you might get cherry juice on your hands.

 "Amazing!" 2009-07-17
By Andrew'sMom (New York)
I just used this cherry pitter for the first time this evening - I did a whole bag of cherries in less than 10 minutes while watching television. As the other reviewer stated - it pits four cherries at a time, the tray has 4 small holes and 4 larger holes and all the mess (juice/pit) stays in the tray. Also, of note, I pitted some cherries with the stems on as a test and out of 24 cherries - 20 kept the stem in place and removed the pit - and the other four I was able to put the stem back in place - [...]. Great product.

 "Good enough for me" 2009-07-05
By Blondiefan (Pittsburgh, PA United States)
I tried it for the first time today, and it's OK. I like that it pits up to four cherries at one time, and that you can choose between small or large sizes by flipping the plastic tray around. It makes a hole in a cherry that looks just like a canned pitted black olive hole, with an X shape on one side and a round hole on the other. Now I don't have to deal with juicy mess and the potential for getting cut using a paring knife to pit my seven pounds of cherries!

Have a Red, White, and Green Holiday with Pretty Party Pinwheels

by Amazon al Dente at 12:43 PM PDT, July 2, 2009

I think it’s un-American to have a Fourth of July weekend shindig without good snacks. And sorta sad, too. Especially when the below recipe for Pretty Party Pinwheels (from Party Snacks, 2008, Harvard Common Press) is darn easy to make, scrumptious, and colorful, with its combination of cream cheese, spinach, tomatoes, and some spices to ensure your party isn’t tasteless. Of course, it does flip in green for blue in the traditional fourth color scheme, but maybe you can serve it on a blue patter? One thing that’s for sure--your guests will love these, and you don’t have to stress out much when making them. That’s a step on the road to party success on any weekend.

Pretty Party Pinwheels
Makes about 70 pinwheels

Ingredients:
2 jalapeño chilies, quartered (leave the seeds in if you like it hotter)
4 green onions, coarsely chopped
2 8-ounce packages cream cheese, at room temperature
1/2 of a 0.4-ounce package ranch dressing mix
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
10 large flour tortillas
5 cups loosely packed fresh spinach, washed and dried
5 to 7 Roma tomatoes, seeded and very thinly sliced
Salsa or Louisiana-style hot sauce, for serving

Directions:
1. Put the jalapeño and onions in a food processor, and process for 3 to 5 seconds, until well chopped. Add the cream cheese, dressing mix, and pepper, and process again until all is well mixed.

2. Using a spatula or butter knife, spread the mixture evenly over one side of each flour tortilla. Add 1/2 cup spinach and a few tomato slices on top of the mixture on each tortilla.

3. Roll up each tortilla, making a tight roll. Once all are rolled and stacked on a plate, cover with plastic wrap or foil and put them in the fridge to chill for about an hour.

4. Using a sharp chef’s knife, slice each rolled tortilla into 1/2-inch-thick rounds. Arrange attractively on a platter. Serve with salsa or a bottle of Louisiana-style hot sauce on the side.

Three Kitchen Gadgets That Work

by Amazon al Dente at 8:11 AM PDT, July 2, 2009

Of the roughly 100,000 kitchen utensils and gadgets we sell at Amazon, there are always some that don't work as well as they should, or even though they're nifty, get relegated to the junk drawer. You know the one. With the extra keys don't seem to fit any lock in your house. So it's always a delight to find gadgets that work--really work! Recently I've added a few essentials to my ever-growing repertoire of culinary odds and ends.

Last month when I discovered that one of my favorite brands, Built, now makes oven mitts, I may have actually squealed with excitement. I tote their stylish and practical lunch bag back and forth every day and am always on the lookout for what cool things this brand is going to do next. Their new line of oven mitts and pot holders is made with the same colorful and fun material as the rest of their products (plus, Built uses wetsuit material, which somehow makes their products extra cool). And, while I do like to look fashionable while taking cookies out of the oven, the best part is that the oven mitt is the best I've found in years. Built smartly designed it to hold the shape your hand is in when grasping a pan. No longer do I have to contort my wrist and hand to make those old-style quilted mitts actually grip a searing hot pan. Also, and I don't know if you've ever noticed this, but those classic mitts have seams right where you hold the pan and the heat seeps through after just a few seconds. No more! Now I'm protected and prettified!

My next find of late is not exactly an essential, but it's a fun tool that gives your plating of meals and desserts a little special flair. If you've been to "fancy" restaurants, you've probably noticed that the mashed potatoes don't come heaped on the plate. No, the kitchen takes special care to dollop them on in perfect ovals. And ice cream or gelato? You know it tastes better when presented in smooth ovals rather than commonplace spheres. Piazza's oval gelato scoop comes in handy for all these instances. While I do primarily use it to fancy up ice cream for dinner guests, it's also fun for artful presentations of wilted greens or pretty mounds of rice. Again, not exactly essential, but definitely fun for the home gourmand.

The last gadget I added to my arsenal recently is the Contigo double-wall travel mug. I first saw it in an industry magazine where it touted a lid that is "100-percent leak-proof and 100-percent spill-proof." Now that I had to try! I bring my coffee to work every day and generally have too few hands for all the work necessities and toddler paraphernalia (and toddler) I need to lug out the door. I'd been dreaming of a mug I could fill up and just throw in my bag without worry. THIS is the mug. Not only has it never leaked even a single drop, even when laid horizontally in my Built lunch tote and jostled for miles, but it also has kept my hot coffee hot and my cold coffee cold for hours on end. I've noticed when I make iced coffee at 8 a.m. that when I leave at 5 p.m. the ice isn't even melted. But still, the tumbler had me at "leak-proof"...

Got any essential kitchen gadgets that have recently come into your life? Add a comment and let me know!
